Youth Sailing is another way to enjoy being a TSSer, with benefits… Youth Sailing leadership “counts” for compliance (important for TSSers renting and waiting for wet and dry slips). It’s fun and rewarding, too... You’re welcome on the Board and we’re grateful for your help with our outreach and fund raising efforts. Pay it forward! Buy a brand new riding sail by Banks Sails. Donated by Dennis Vellenga to TSS, raffled at a regatta, won by a lucky TSSer, who donated it to Youth Sailing. Add to your sail locker and help us multiply the benefit! Dacron, 9’6” luff x 6’2” foot. The $500 reserve would cover tuition for 2 young sailors… Give it up for a good cause and get a tax deduction, too. Donate a boat or equipment for resale. Clean out your boat and garage. Donate outright for a tax deduction or consign your treasures to us and keep a portion of the proceeds. Looking to buy? Check with us, too. Volunteers and donations enable us to minimize operational costs, keeping the registration fee reasonable, and sometimes even providing scholarships. Our nautical flea markets, wine and beer tastings, and boat sponsorships generate some funds, but boat resales make up most of our income. Join the TSSYS Board. Manage a special project. A great course. The future. Aboard a boat, on the porch and among friends, the stories I love begin, “I remember when....” When and where did you learn to sail? No doubt, it’s a fond memory and the foundation for a lifetime of stories and friendships! I remember when the African Queen was a fixture in Bal Harbor and a group of guys were racing Force 5s, Sunfish, a Snipe and a Laser several times a week. Despite a gap of years on either side, John Hartung, Bud Marafiote, Joey Meyer, and a little Lemmer didn’t yield an inch to George Cussins, Darin O’Neal, Jeff Austin and the others. Every race was raced again on the porch afterwards, with casual coaching and camaraderie. TSS Youth Sailing grew from all that. I remember when Jeff loaned our Sunfish to Bob Shaw for a very young Wesley and I love that Ryan Kresge is racing that Sunfish now. I remember when we heard about young Lee Mortimer racing out of DIYC and I love that he’s responsible for TSS’s Sea Scout Regatta and a family now. I remember when Bill Mann, Ed Peters and Bill Borrer raced with boats full of kids and I remember when we had 3 Sea Scout ships sailing out of TSS. Golly, we all were younger then! Recounting the early years of TSS Youth Sailing: In the summer of 1991, largely due to Bud [Marafiote]’s passion for teaching and his enthusiasm in enlisting other club members, the first "Youth Sailing" classes were held with a volunteer teaching staff headed by Bill Borrer. Among those very first club members to volunteer time and energy were Bud Marafiote, Antolin Rivera, George Cussins, Bob Meyer, Bob Shaw, Eric Eisele, Jeff Austin, and Ray Dupuis. The first fleet was made up of prams purchased by Davy Jones from the Clearwater Yacht Club for the bargain price of $1.00 each. These plywood hulls covered with mat fiberglass were made shipshape by Bruce Kerns, Ed Johnson, Scott Echols, Bill Borrer, Bud Marafiote, Antolin Rivera, Charlie Bruno, Bart Nunn and others. Classes were held each Saturday during school vacation, and cost only $25.00 to cover wear on the prams. The program was adapted from the “Anyone Can Sail a Sunfish” program, but the emphasis was on making sailing fun first and then learning the basics. After a quick swim test given by Bart Nunn, every child was sailing the first day! ... [In 2000, TSS Youth Sailing, Inc., was incorporated as a Florida nonprofit and a federal 501(c)(3) organization, exclusively for educational purposes.] Signers on the original letter of incorporation included Bud Marafiote, Bill and Paula Borrer, Bob Shaw, Bill Lemmer, Susan Bishop, Matt Dalton, David Watson Jr., and Jim Bothwell, who represented TSS and provided the corporate leadership for the incorporation process.
